Humanity Roll (Left to Right) - A Sculpture by Garry R. Bibbs


Brown + Kubican provided the structural engineering to suspend this stainless steel and bronze sculpture in the atrium of the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky.  The sculpture, created by UK Associate Art Professor Garry R. Bibbs (, is over 70 feet long and weighs approximately 7,500 pounds. 

The sculpture is supported by wire ropes which attach to the roof structure.  The center section, where most of the weight is concentrated, is hung by 2 wire ropes off of a stainless steel pendant created from 2 circular discs welded together.  The pendant is supported by 4 wire ropes that connect to the top of the atrium columns just above the ceiling.  6 additional ropes are utilized to support the sculpture ends and to provide lateral stability. 

The sculpture is located in the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky, a project designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects ( and Ross Tarrant Architects ( and structured by Brown + Kubican.  The sculpture was installed in 3 weeks during the holiday break for UK in December of 2016 and January of 2017.  Wilhite Limited ( installed the support system using a combination of electric and chain hoists within the atrium, eliminating the need for a large crane and the need to penetrate the roof.  Brown + Kubican worked with Wilhite to develop the hoisting system design, incorporating hookup points into the permanent support system and the sculpture for temporary lifting devices.

University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) Coal Gasifier

Located at the University of Kentucky’s Center for Applied Energy Research facility at the Ironworks Pike research campus, this project incorporates two new steel towers and ancillary equipment foundations.  Both steel towers support various experimental equipment used to convert solid coal to a gaseous fuel.  Both towers utilize moment connections for lateral stability and are founded on rock bearing concrete footings.

University of Pikeville - Pile/Lagging/Tieback Retaining Wall


To facilitate construction of the New Health Service Building, a stay-in place retaining wall approximately 30 feet tall and 300 feet long was constructed of steel piles socketed into bedrock with soil anchor tiebacks and timber lagging.  The wall was designed for crane surcharge loading and we detailed to be encased in concrete and permanently used as a site retaining wall and seating bench.


Lee Brick and Block Hopper Support Structure Alteration

Lexington, KY based concrete block manufacturer Lee Brick & Block required an existing steel hopper to be raised in order to add a feeder for colored concrete.  B+K designed a support frame alteration that allowed the existing hopper and hopper platform framing to be removed and reinstalled on vertically extended columns.  The increase in height generated greater forces in the existing structural members, resulting in the need to reinforce those members.  Lexington based structural steel fabricator and installer Wilhite LTD executed the steel frame reinforcing/extension and the removal and replacement of the hopper.
